Thai New Year (Songkran)

Things are heating up here in the paradise isle, literally, it is 34 degrees with 99% humidity, however the worlds biggest cooling off party begins next week, Songkran which is the Thai New Year.

One of the many beauties of living in the Land of Smiles is the Thai love of a good party, this means all New Years are celebrated with a religious fervour, Western New Year and Chinese New Year are celebrated with enthusiasm but the biggest by far is the Thai New Year.

Traditionally the day was noted by sprinkling a little water on passers by and a little bit of paste was applied to the face as a blessing and wish for good luck in the year ahead.

Whilst this still happens it mainly has evolved into THIS !

Quite simply it is the world’s biggest water battle, everyone is expected to join in and no-one is safe, police, army, young and old alike from early morning through to dusk the streets are lined with people soaking each other, even people driving bikes are not exempt from a thorough dousing.

Want to stay dry on Songkran ? Book a trip on Shangani and sit in the Jacuzzi, it is drier than the streets !
